Laxey 6 Ramsey Youth Centre 3 FA Cup

Greens in the Valley, 5 January 2019 17:20

Laxey remain unbeaten in 2019 after a 6-3 victory against Division Two league leaders Ramsey Youth Centre, in the first round of the FA Cup

The team turned out in the new kit from new sponsors, Newfield.  After the good performance against St Georges last week, there were two changes as Andy Burkitt and Jake Garvey had returned to college - and in came George Burrows and Matty Wilkinson.

Laxey started with three at the back of Tom Kenny, David Screech Corlett and Tom Callow with Danny Bailey and Matty Wilkinson as covering wing backs.

And what a start to the New Year - in the first minute Laxey were one nil up.   A through ball from George to Joe Walters, and Joe coolly scored to give us the best possible start.

Shortly after George found himself clear and with just the keeper to beat, missed, as they say, 'a sitter'.

Mason Prince, in goals made a good gather on the goal line to stop a RYC attack, but though RYC looked good in attack, Laxey at that stage were in charge of the game.

The best pass of the game to that stage came from Dave Reynolds, an injured spectator on the sidelines.   While Manager John was on the pitch freeze spraying an injured Jez, Dave, with his left foot, kicked in a replacement ball so inch perfect that it brushed past Jez and John and stopped exactly at the feet of the referee Tommy Crowe.   Rarely has such accuracy been accidentally achieve by the wrong foot.

In the sixteenth minute, Michael Fernades was tripped outside the area and a free kick awarded.  Michael took the kick, from about 28 yards out, and hit it hard and low, and in - 2 - 0 and Laxey were looking good.

They were looking even better two minutes later when Michael fed a lovely ball through to Matty Wilkinson who cleverly scored from the edge of the area to make it 3-0 to Laxey.

Matty then had a shot saved by the RYC goalkeeper's feet, a good save from a very effective keeper.  Matty then had another good moment when at the other end, as last man, he made a great tackle to stop a RYC forward who was just about to pull the trigger for a possible goal.

RYC then got back into the game.     A shot by them was saved and pushed out by Mason, but a forward followed up to score to make it 3-1 in the 28th minute.

And just two minutes later they were definitely right back in the game when a free kick by RYC led to a header being scored to make it 3-2 with thirty minutes gone.

Just a minute later though, George had a shot saved, and then Joe turned and shot, bringing out a great save from the RYC keeper but Michael followed up by smashing the ball in to give Laxey a 4-2 lead with 31 minutes gone.

Four minutes into the second half and RYC scored again - again from a free kick headed in over keeper Mason.  4 - 3 and RYC looked like a good attacking unit.

Aaron Broad, having a good game in the middle, as he did against St Georges, went on a long run from the halfway line and got into the six yard box before a last ditch tackle by RYC robbed him of a chance to shoot.

George Burrows, working with Aaron had one of his best games of late, and running back with an attacker, wrapped his leg around the ball to win it back cleanly, an outstanding tackle.

Tom Kenny did similar with a last minute tackle to deny a forward.   The Youth Centre team looked a good unit moving forward and the back three, led by Screech did an excellent job keeping them out.

Danny Bailey, who had worked hard covering a lot of ground in attack and defence, was substituted for Stan Manning .  Shortly after a RYC player, who had earlier been booked for a tackle, said something to the referee, including a word of four letters, and he received the red card.   So Laxey were now playing ten men.

In a busy few minutes when Laxey were on the attacking front foot, Michael had a shot over the bar, and then Joe had a shot saved.

Matty then won a ball out on the right wing and put in a good cross, when from out of nowhere, Joe smashed into the net on the full volley to make it 5 - 3 with 20 minutes of the half gone - a brilliantly taken goal, and a goal to take the pressure off, as RYC always looked capable of making a comeback.

Aaron then came off to give Harry Gilbert his First Team debut, which moved Matty into the centre of midfield.

Michael had another shot, pushed out for a corner, and couple of minutes later another shot, also pushed behind for a corner. Stan Manning did a little bit of magic out on the left and jinked inside the box and his low shot pinged of the bottom of the upright.

Tommy Callow took a free kick just outside the area which the keeper was able to save. Jez Lovett, who had put in a good shift in the middle then came off for the last few minutes for Tom Murray. .

Stan had another shot, again well saved by the RYC keeper and Matty had another shot which hit the post.  Joe also had another shot saved.

In the dying minutes, Matty slipped a good ball forward to Tommy Callow who somehow found himself in the penalty area, and Tommy was able to slip a shot under the keeper to make it 6 - 3 - the final scoreline.

A well deserved win in the end, though RYC were always threatening and Laxey always looked better when they started their passing game, as was demonstrated in the last 20 minutes when they passed the ball, kept possession, and contained the opposition.

So, that is three good recent performances  against Douglas Athletic, Geordies and RYC which augers well for the future.

We need to train hard, keep going to the end, to make sure we get those two or three wins to keep in the Division

This was a good team performance, everyone playing well, and playing their part.

The Man of the Match decision was difficult - most players got votes, which shows how much a team effort it was, and in the end it was between Screech, Tommy Callow and Michael Fernades with a couple of others very close.

However, for his two goals, assists and general all round play, the Greens in the Valley Man of the Match goes to

Michael Fernades
