A disappointing result but a close run thing against a Corinthians team tipped for big things this season, and who had beaten St Georges in the Charity Shield a couple of week earlier.
The visit of Corinthians saw the return to Laxey of recently departed Tom Smith and Darryl Haslett.
Dave Reynolds and Matty Wilkinson returned to the team and the game started with Matty having a good run and then a great cross to Joe Walters, which just needed a touch.
In the defence Andrew Burkitt made a good interception from a dangerous Corinthians cross. The first Haslett clash came when Michael Haslett, at speed, beat Darryl and ran on to put a good cross into the box.
Dave Reynolds was having a good game and made a big tackle to stop a Corinthians attack. We also saw good defensive work between Mikey H and Andy Burkitt to win the ball in the area, as Corinthians had a small flurry of attacks.
Joe Walters had a shot saved by the Corinthians goalkeepers feet, and in another Laxey attack a free kick was awarded for a handball and Michael Fernandes hit the kick just wide.
At the other end David Screech Corlett put in a great block to stop an attack, and then Michael F was booked for a very robust tackle on childhood sweetheart Darryl.
There was more good play from Mikey H to intercept a Corinthians attacker who had got through clear on goal.
Michael F had a shot saved after a good head on to him by Sean Gavin, and Matty, with some more good play won a corner. It was a very even game at this stage with few chances to either side, and Laxey were matching Corinthians in all areas.
More good winning tackles were being put in by Mikey H, who was definitely outshining his brother. Sean had a shot over after a good flowing move with Joe Walters and George Burrows - they work well together - and Jake Garvey made a tremendous recovering tackle to break up a Corinthians attack down the wing. Corinthians had a shot which hit the bar and Dave Reynolds made a good block to stop the follow up shot.
Half time and Laxey were well in the game, and certainly playing the more imaginative football.
The second half started with a great clearing header from Dave Reynolds. Sean put in a ball over to the right and Michael F had a great chance which he volleyed just wide. Sean then had a shot on the turn just wide, and Mikey H won the ball with a good tackle and went on a good run. His speed is a real asset to the team.
Sean then robbed the ball from Tom Smith and there followed some good work between him and George Burrows.
Laxey keeper Andy Ball had had nothing to do for over an hour, and the first shot he had to save, he made a great save to tip the ball over the bar.
Corinthians had a few attacks and Screech made a great tackle on the left and Andy Burkitt also made a good saving tackle.
Matty had another shot from the right, just over the bar and Andy Ball was called into action for the second time when he made a point blank save with his body to stop what looked like a certain goal for Corinthians.
He was called into action a third time, tipping a long range shot over the bar.
Michael F took out Darryl with a second very robust tackle and a red card was looming but fortunately Darryl got up without fuss and the referee took no action. Those tackles should provide some conversation for them on their next night out...
Fifteen minutes to go and Corinthians were having their best spell, but Laxey looked strong in defence.
Sean went on another good run and turned and his cross was cut out by the keeper.
With14 minutes to go, Corinthians scored. Jake had done some good work with a couple of tackles to stop the winger, but the ball broke into the middle and a shot from about 18 yards out took a wicked deflection and gave Andy no chance of saving it. 1 - 0 to Corinthians
Joe Murley came on for Dave Reynolds and he also showed his speed with a couple of good runs.
Andy Ball had one more save to make, turning a shot away for a corner. Cian Brock came on for Sean Gavin with a few minutes left.
A final flurry for Laxey came when a teasing cross by Mikey H was headed just wide by Corinthians defence for a corner.
So the game ended with a disappointing narrow loss. However it was a very good team performance, easily matching Corinthians in skills and determination and on that showing Laxey will be able to challenge at all levels in the coming season.
Laxey faded a bit in the last twenty minutes which was the only time Corinthians had any real chances. The stats show that the majority of corners and shots for Corinthians came in the last 25 minutes of the game.
In the first half Corinthians did not have a shot on target and Laxey were very solid in defence all game. Like Corinthians, despite a lot of hard work by our forwards, we had few attempts on target, and that maybe because of the evenness of the midfield battle.
As against Colby, everyone had a good game, with Dave Reynolds and Andy Burkitt just shading it above the rest.
However there was no doubt as to who the Man of the Match was for a non-stop performance, being involved in most attacks and strong in defence - the Greens in the Valley Man of the Match is
Shots on Target 2 5
Shots off Target 6 7
Corners 3 8
