Laxey 6 Braddan 3

Greens in the Valley, 3 September 2017 19:52

A new season with new management - Paul Callow taking on the role of the First Team and Dean Turton taking over the Combination.

Testing times for the new management as several established players have moved on and a lot of burden is put on the young players who are stepping up.

We saw the return of a Golden Oldie when Johnny 'Justice for Johnny' Callow returned to the first team joining the only other established long term players such as David Screech Corlett, Michael Fernandes and Sean Gavin.   The rest of the team were mostly those who have experienced a lot of success at Junior level and will now be the mainstays of this campaign.

Laxey started brightly and Sean Gavin had a clear chance very early on which he was not able to convert.  The term 'sitter' was bandied about.

Michael had a shot on the turn which was blocked by the Braddan defence and then Braddan took a more dominant role, attacking via a couple of corners and with twelve minutes gone they went ahead with a shot in from the right.    About three minutes later they had another very clear chance which they wasted.

On twenty minutes they went two up when keeper Andy Ball fouled an attacker on the edge of the area and he had no chance with the subsequent penalty which was awarded.

Five minutes later Laxey got back into the game to make it 2 - 1 down.  Johnny Callow fed a good ball to Michael and he set up Sean who hit a low shot in just out of the reach of the keeper.

Joe Walters was showing his class with a lot of good runs and a 'never give up' attitude which caused problems for the shaky Braddan defence. He had a good run up the left after a clever flick on from Michael, but it led to the defence snuffing it out.

We scored again on 28 minutes to make it 2 - 2.   Johnny took a free kick from the right  and as it dipped in towards the far post, Michael swept it in from a couple of yards out, a good delivery and a good goal.

Joe W had a shot wide, and at the other end Andy had to make a good save with his feet.

There was more good work from Johnny when he made a great tackle in midfield and slipped a great ball through to Michael up front.

Joe Walters had another great run forward, breaking clear, but his shot was saved.

Shortly after that he scored to put us ahead.  With 40 minutes gone, Stan Manning, having a good game in midfield, put in a good cross to Joe W and he scored from ten yards to make it 3 - 2.

And just before halftime it was 4 - 2.   After a sustained period of attack by Laxey a cross came into the box and Screech headed it on to Jake Garvey and Jake made no mistake in heading in from a few yards out.

The first half ended with a complete turn around.  In the first half the full backs Joe Murley and Jake Garvey were impressive for their energy and commitment..

Early in the second half Johnny came off with a calf injury and was replaced by Nakathan (Tar) who impressed with his enthusiasm and runs.

Laxey were continuing to look the better team and Sean had a shot saved and Michael headed wide.

We saw Sean win a cracking blockbuster tackle which left him injured for a while.

Andy Burkitt put in a couple of great tackles and was looking so cool and capable at the back - closing his men down all the time and allowing them no room, and never giving up.

Sean was struggling a bit and was replaced by Rob McCowliffe - and we welcome him back, a big physical presence and an articulate leader on the pitch.

We went 5-2 up following an excellent run by Stan up the right and then along the byline - he pulled the ball along the line and square to Tar in just the right place to sweep it in with 20 minutes of the half gone.

Joe Walters went on one of his long runs up the middle, leaving all in his wake, and his shot was turned out for a corner.

George Burrows, such a clever player, was pulling all the strings in the middle and he had a good shot which was blocked.

Braddan got one back, one of the blue, to make it 5 - 3.

Then we saw the Braddan keeper make a mistake with a ball in from George, and was then being hassled by Michael, and as the ball dropped, Michael took his time to round a defender and score to make it 6 - 3.

Stan was injured and third sub Paul Callow came on for the last few minutes.  By this time Rob was moved up front, and Joe W was having fun in the midfield. Joe W put a ball into Rob who shot just wide, and then from a good ball in from Jake he volleyed a shot just wide.  The game finished with George hitting a great volley which was saved.

This was a great team performance.   We had assists from Screech, Michael, George, Stan, and Johnny and goals from five different players showing it was a team effort.

A great start to the season.  There will be harder games, and as a Braddan official commented near the end "Laxey are fitter than us".

So please keep up the intensive training - to stay with the top teams we need to stay with them on fitness.

Congratulations to everyone on a good day for Laxey.

It was very difficult to choose a Man of the Match as everyone had a really good game - but overall the vote goes to a young player who kept his cool throughout the game and was rarely beaten and helped us to contain Braddan when they had gone two up.

So this week the Greens in the Valley Man of the Match goes to

Andrew Burkitt
