Corinthians 4 Laxey 1

Greens in the Valley, 12 November 2016 18:27

A disappointing result against a slick Corinthians, despite a good second half from Laxey.

Aidan Cummins came back into the team, replacing the absent Shaun Kelly, otherwise there were no changes.

There was early pressure from Corinthians who looked the more likely to score, but on ten minutes it was Laxey who went ahead.

A long throw in from Christian Penswick fell to Aidan who back-headed in a looping header over the keeper to make it 1 - 0 to Laxey.

However just a minute after the kick off Corinthians scored.  A cross from the right was hit in and they equalised.

Matthew Wilkinson had a shot just wide and after a good build up between Sean Gavin and Michael Fernandes, Fraser Vaughan had a shot saved.

Michael then won a corner as his cross was blocked.

Corinthians took the lead with 26 minutes gone, when again a cross from the right was headed in near the edge of the area.  2 -1 and three minutes later it was 3 -1 when and almost identical cross was blasted in from the penalty area to put Corinthians well on top.

Andy Ball made a good one handed save from a corner, and eventually Laxey made some progress.  Jonny Shields was moved further forward and he broke through and had a shot wide.

The second half was much better for Laxey, though with little reward.  A Matthew W corner saw a shot from Jamie Callister deflected for another corner, and further pressure at corners led to a Corinthians defender back heading almost into goal, but in the end out for a corner.   From a series of corners, Tom Smith had a shot blocked on the line, and Laxey were at this stage dominating, with Corinthians rarely getting into the Laxey half.

Jonny Shields was beginning to run the show and showing the form and determination of last season, and was linking well with Declan and Fraser and using balls down the wings well.

When they did we saw Andy collect very cleanly under pressure at a Corinthians corner.  Some good Laxey play led to a good run down the wing from Matthew Wilkinson, who had a good game.

Subs were made with Michael and Matthew W coming off to be replaced by Matt Skillicorn and Joe Murley.  There followed another period of Laxey pressure, but the ball did not run kindly for Laxey.

Laxey had two shots blocked and cleared off the line and there was a bit of goalmouth ping pong which did not go the way of Laxey.

Corinthians had a breakaway attack and Fraser ran back and put in a magnificent tackle to rob the onrushing attacker.

Aidan was booked by 73 year old referee Peter Lewis - still sprightly - for a strong tackle.  Laxey had their clearest chance of the half when Joe Murley put in a good cross from the right and Declan missed his chance in front of goal, hitting wide.   Jamie Callister had another good header from a corner and that had to be saved by the Corinthians keeper.

Then against the run of play, in the closing minutes, Corinthians scored a fourth.   A long range effort from outside the area went in giving Andy Ball little chance.  Andy had another excellent game with faultless handling throughout.   There was a moment of panic at the very end when an underhit back pass was seized on by Corinthians and Christian made a good last ditch saving block.

It was a disappointing game, though Corinthians are a much better side this season - Laxey did try to play football throughout, and did so much better in the second half, after giving away three fairly soft goals early in the first half.  Corinthians did look the fitter and more committed side and pressed Laxey throughout, but Laxey played football to counter them, particularly in the second half.

Despite the score, the defence played well, Jamie Callister having one of his best games, Tom Smith showing his coolness under pressure and working well with his colleagues up the right hand side of the pitch.  And finally a word for Joe Walters who turned up and unfortunately did not get on as a sub - his time will come.

Stand out players were Christian, Fraser and Jonny and it was a close run thing for Man of the Match.

So the Greens in the Valley Man of the Match this week was

Jonny Shields
