Laxey 1 Rushen 1 5th November 2016

Greens in the Valley, 5 November 2016 21:02

This was the third draw on the trot, and yet again a game where Laxey could say "if only"...

Back in the team were Declan Cummins and Jonny Shields and Laxey played three at the back with Tom Smith and Jamie Callister either side of Christian Penswick.

Laxey started brightly and the first action saw Shaun Kelly hit a strong shot across the goal.   Tom Smith made a great saving tackle early on and laid off a perfect ball up the wing to Michael Fernandes, whose cross was blocked.

Declan made a great midfield header to move Laxey forward and at this early stage Laxey were well on top winning a couple of corners.

From one corner came the first goal - Matt Wilkinson - who took excellent challenging corners all game - flighted one in and it was clear to Shaun who put the ball back into the box and it was pushed out again to Declan on the edge of the area - Declan blasted a low shot through all the players to score and make it 1 - 0 to Laxey with 12 minutes gone.

Rushen had a chance straight afterwards, blasting a shot over from close range.

Michael had another cross blocked for a corner, and from that a Fraser header was bound for goal but was headed off the line.

Michael had a chance when he pushed the ball beyond the Rushen keeper but his shot from an angle was hit into the side netting.

Andy Ball in goal made a great save, throwing his body in the way of a close range shot, and just after, he had to save a strong long range shot.

In attack, the Laxey long throw tecnique nearly worked well when Fraser headed just fractionally over a Christian long throw.  Andy made another save from a free kick just outside the area, and at the other end Michael had a shot in the box well blocked by the Rushen keeper.

Shaun was booked for a bit of a late tackle and then he had a good shot saved by the keeper's feet.   Sean Gavin also had a shot, but this was just over the bar.

At the end of the half Andy was called on again to make two great saves, just good enough to stop Rushen equalising before half time, as they seemed likely to do but for those saves.

Laxey had dominated the first half, giving Rushen little chance and could have been several more than one up.

The second half was a different story - Rushen came out strongly and put Laxey under pressure - and in the sixth minute of the half they scored.  A ball from far out on the right seemed to go through everyone and into the net via the far post.   1 - 1.

Rushen continued on the attack and there was some staunch defending from Jamie, Tom and Christian, backed up by yet more good saves and handling from Andy in goal.

Laxey did have a chance, with a cross from the left coming to Michael clear in front of goal, but he could just not get his head onto it.

Michael and Matt W came off to give subs Matt Skillicorn and Joe Murley a run.  The pace of Matt S down the wing soon showed and he honed in on goal and had a shot which smashed off the far post.  So close to a winner.    Andy made yet another great save to keep Laxey in the game and Shaun had a strong shot from the wing saved by the Rushen keeper.

Declan was booked for a fairly innocuous tackle and the refereeing decisions were not going Laxey's way.

As the half came to a close, Laxey had a purple patch - Sean had a shot saved and then followed some ping pong football where shots were cleared off the line, defenders got in the way, the Rushen keeper got a hand to a ball, and Laxey had about four chances in ten seconds, and it seemed impossible the ball would stay out.

And five minutes later, the same thing happened again, a series of shots were blocked by defenders, the post, the cross bar and the keeper and still the ball would not go in.

Rushen also had a final flourish, and twice in five minutes Christian Penswick made two desperate last ditch clearances off the line when goals seemed certain.  He was having an excellent game before that, but in the end he proved to be a saviour for Laxey by being in the right place when needed.

The game finished  as a draw, perhaps the right result.  Indeed Laxey dominated the first half and could have scored more - and Rushen had much the better of the second half and also could have scored a winner but for some stout defending.

A good performance by everyone but three players stood out - Shaun Kelly, Christian and Andy Ball in goals.

We lose Shaun from next week and everyone at the Club wishes him well (and a speedy return) and his will be big shoes to fill.   We have talented players like Jonny Shields and Fraser who can fill those boots and reach his standards.

Christian was a match saver with his goal line clearances, on top of his good performance, but for his shot stopping and all round play which kept us in the game throughout, the Greens in the Valley Man of the Match is:

Andy Ball
