The Grand Slam is Complete !!!!!
The Laxey Chronicle, 22 May 2006 08:14
Laxey Football Club etched their name in the history books with
victory over St Georges in Sunday's Hospital Cup final to complete
Manx football's Grand Slam.
The final score of 4-3 was perhaps closer that it should have
been but at the end of the day any win is a good win !!
The game was played in very poor weather conditions with
torrential rain making the pitch a veritable mud bath.
Goals from Chris Brown and Rob Sorby put Laxey 2-0 in front
before Chris Feeney reduced the deficit, only for Neil Brogan to
make it 3-1 thanks to a diving header. The game really got going in
the final quarter as St Georges were forced to throw the kitchen
sink at Laxey. Geordies grabbed a second after a mistake by Sorby
before equalising with 2 minutes to go when Callum Morrissey found
the back of the net.
Laxey's never say die attitude then kicked in and Laxey's Golden
Child Nigel Beattie popped up a minute later with the vital 4th
goal to seal a memorable win.
So that's the League, Charity Shield, Railway Cup, FA Cup and
Hispital Cup all won, the whole season unbeaten and 6 victories
over Geordies !!!
Man of the Match - Keith Brown. I thought he put in a true
Captain's performance marshalling his defence superbly and putting
in a number of last ditch challenges, as well as finding time to
claim assists for 3 of the 4 goals ! Justin Hawley had a superb
first half, whilst Gary Williams and Ross Williamson were their
usual impressive selves. Mark Blair made some important saves at
key times during the game and was unfortunate to suffer a bad knee
injury at the end.
